Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
There was too much hype about this book that I have moved other books in my to-read list to make room for this. It was okay, but I must admit I was a little bit disappointed. I was expecting a little more depth since it’s supposed to be a “Chinese” book and if you have been following Amy Tan, you would know that there should be a lesson to learn in almost every page of such themed book. This book is more like “reality TV in a book”. It started fine but soon enough I felt there was no direction, just a strong opinion of the difference between “Chinese” parenting and “Western” parenting. However, I was able to identify myself in her situation, that is, the shouting matches, tantrums, not getting your way with your kids so I guess this is not solely a problem of a Chinese-living-in-America mom; it’s a problem of moms in general.
Did not like the ending too as I felt the author just lost interest and decided to just print whatever she was able to come up with. She should have read more Amy Tans to inspire her until the ending of her book.
it was an okay read. You would probably like this book if you would like to take a peek into an American-Chinese household, nothing more. Photos were good though.
